The Bellamy
Brothers Ranch
The Bellamy
Brother Ranch started with the brothers
Great-Grandfather. Abraham Milton Bellamy was born
in Horry County, SC. Shortly after his marriage to
Susanna Dewitt Vereen, he enlisted in the
Confederate Army and served as a member of
Chickamauga and Carolina Infantry. He was wounded at
the Battle of Chickamauga and later captured in
Atlanta. He was paroled from Camp Douglas, IL in
1865.
After the war between the
states ended, Abraham and Susanna moved to Florida
and settled near the present day community ranch, in
Darby, Florida; just north of Tampa.
Today the 150 acre homestead is a working ranch,
owned and operated by the
Bellamy Family. The livestock consists of brangus,
angus, and crossbred cattle and quarter horses. A
large variety of citrus fruits grow there as well,
such as oranges, kumquats,
and grapefruits. The land is lush green, with
numerous oaks, holly's, and crepe myrtles. Three
generations currently live on the ranch in four
homes, headed by Frances Bellamy and her sons,
Howard and David. They also lease a nearby 2500 acre
ranch, which is a
calf-cow operation.
